Drug Take Back is April 29

If you have expired or unwanted medications lying around the house, you can safely dispose of them at the Drug Take Back event on Saturday, April 29, at the Randolph County Sheriff’s office. This is a “no questions asked” drop-off. Officers will accept prescription and over the counter medications from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. behind the county courthouse. Only pills or patches can be dropped off; no liquids, needles or sharps.

This free and anonymous initiative is part of the national Drug Take Back, which has safely disposed of over seven million pounds—more than 3,500 tons—of pills in 12 previous events. It prevents pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted drugs, addressing a vital public health and safety issue. Unused medications in homes are susceptible to diversion and misuse, including accidental poisoning, overdoses and opioid abuse.

In addition to the dangers of unused drugs falling into the hands of children or being used illegally, medications pose a hazard to the environment. Flushing drugs down the toilet is not as safe and harmless as you might think as many cause serious environmental harm. Sewage treatment plants don’t filter out drugs so they are being discharged into ground and surface water. Antibiotics flushed down the toilet kill the beneficial bacteria that make your septic tank work.

Studies show that flushing old drugs is dangerous to rivers, lakes, and streams, and harms animals that live there. The United States Geological Survey has shown that 80% of U.S. streams contain compounds found in common medications. Fish and other aquatic animals have shown adverse effects from medicines in the water.

Partners for this event are the Randolph County Sheriffs Office and the Upper Tallapoosa Clean Water Partnership.

PPBT Birding Photo Contest

Open to youth, age 15 and under, and any amateur photographer, with “amateur’ defined as someone who does not earn a living from photography!

Photos must have been taken during the calendar year 2016 and must have been taken at any of the thirty-four (34) official sites on the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail. We naturally accept photos of birds, but any artistic view of the official site as well. Your pictures must easily identify the site at which you are taking photos. A simple solution is to take a picture of the site signage before and after your subject photos. These will NOT be counted in your ‘5 picture’ submission guidelines.

There is no charge for entering this contest. All photos should be at least 300 dpi and may be submitted on CD or flash drive in the jpg format, or via email to ppbtphotocontest@gmail.com. Each should be accompanied by your name, address, contact information and telephone, all in legible handwriting.

Winning entries will be highlighted in the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail newsletter, official Facebook page and displayed on our Flickr page as well. By submitting entries, participants grant permission for the Alabama Birding Trails, the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail, along with any partner organization to publish any/all submissions on printed materials, official websites and to share on social media. The contest begins March 1st and the deadline is 5:00 pm October 31, 2016.

Our contest has two classes: birds & artistic site shots. There are two levels of entry: youth ( 15 & under) & amateur. You may enter up to five (5) photos in each class.

New Randolph County ‘Brand’ revealed

2016 randolph county new brand logoRandolph County Economic Development Authority hosted a media conference to announce a new county-wide brand on Tuesday morning at the Bank of Wedowee-Roanoke Branch.

The “Genuinely Different” logo created by award-winning community marketing firm, Red Sage Communications Inc., will become the icon for Randolph County defining the county as it is today and supporting the county as it continues to define its future.

The new brand and messaging for Randolph County reflects the genuine Southern experience found across the county. Few communities offer such an authentic spirit and wealth of preserved natural resources. This strength is now highlighted to capture the unique characteristics of each of the four towns and to bring attention to the intriguing history, wide-ranging industrial base, diversity of land and unspoiled beauty, such as Lake Wedowee, found throughout the county.

“As we worked through the strategic planning process, a theme that kept occurring time after time was one of promoting county unity,” said Jared Kirby, president of First Bank and chair of the strategic planning committee. “We began working with Red Sage to achieve the goal of branding our county. The process included the insight and contributions of numerous community members. We are excited to unveil a brand that can be used consistently and help Randolph County become instantly recognizable. ”

Red Sage Communications Inc. President Ellen Didier said, “To learn what makes a community special, you have to go to the people. We kept hearing words like genuine, community, authentic, close-knit, pride and heritage. Our task was to translate these attributes into a tagline and logo that clearly and uniquely defined the county as a whole.”
The logo uses a bold color palette to represent many sectors of the county, including education, downtown streetscapes, industry, agriculture and beautiful landscapes, including rolling hills and peaceful waters. The logo, as well as the tagline, captures the genuinely different features and character of Randolph County.

“Our county has so many unique aspects, and they all work together to make Randolph County a dynamic place to live, work and visit. The branding committee wanted the logo and tagline to encompass the things that make the county what it is; therefore the elements of the logo represent a variety of things that people think of when they think of our county,” said Shondae Brown, director of public relations at Southern Union, who served as the branding committee co-chair.

“In order to move the county forward on many different fronts, it is important to promote unity. This branding process helped us to be able to look at the many wonderful things that Randolph County has to offer, and to bring them all under one umbrella to effectively promote our great county,” said Larry Roberts, chair of Randolph County Commission.

The brand was developed with input from a local brand advisory committee of eight (Shondae Brown, Vickie Cummings, Tom Garland, Gregory Johnson, Larry Roberts, Marian Royston, Cotina Terry and Clay Tinney) following two focus group sessions conducted on Jan. 29 and Jan. 30. These two sessions welcomed 54 participants, including representatives from the county commission, every municipality in Randolph County, state representatives, the chamber of commerce, school systems, healthcare, local businesses, economic development and other key groups. Following the focus group sessions, an online survey was launched to determine the new tagline. The resulting brand supports the core strengths and unique characteristics identified in these sessions.

“Throughout the focus group process, people kept mentioning the genuine compassion and authenticity of the people of the county. The committee felt that these are among our greatest strengths, and we wanted to be sure to capture that sentiment in our brand,” said Vickie Cummings, co-chair of the branding committee and sales supervisor for TEC.
The branding project and implementation efforts are being partially funded through the Community Marketing Program, a program developed by PowerSouth Energy Cooperative to provide the counties within their service area with tools for leveraging their county’s presence on the regional, national and international stage and drive economic development efforts.

“PowerSouth Energy was happy to be able to play a role in the Randolph County Community Branding Initiative,” said Caleb Goodwyn, economic and community development representative for PowerSouth Energy Cooperative. “The level of community participation throughout this process lends further proof to the commitment of the citizens of Randolph County and the dedication and professionalism of the Randolph County Economic Development Authority. We hope that this unique brand will lead to greater visibility for Randolph County on the national and international levels and will lead to future economic development successes. Randolph County is a unique place to live, work and play, and we hope this will allow the county to more effectively reach their target audience.”
The new logo and tagline will be adapted for use and implemented throughout the county with brand-building activities led by the brand advisory committee, including county marketing, as well as national and international recruitment. The Randolph County Economic Development Authority is sporting a custom adaptation of the logo and commissioned a county brochure utilizing the new brand and messaging.

“The Genuinely Different logo and tagline for Randolph County fully captures the essence of Randolph County. I am very excited to have a unified brand to use in all of our marketing and recruiting efforts,” said Cotina Terry, executive director, Randolph County Economic Development Authority. “The brand is a great fit for all of RCEDA’s efforts in promoting existing industry, enhancing our workforce, highlighting our educational offerings, as well as recruiting new business and industry to the county. We are now ready to let the world know that Randolph County is ready to offer tourists, businesses and industry a ‘Genuinely Different’ experience.”

“When we started the planning process a year and a half ago, we really wanted to capture who we already are as a county. We feel this logo and tagline embodies our strengths. Our hope is that the brand is embraced by all who live in and love Randolph County,” stated Wendell Shelton, immediate past president, RCEDA.

The East Alabama Antique Tractor Club Pavilion located in the Wedowee Kiwanis Park in Wedowee was the setting for the Randolph County Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting on Tuesday, October 13, 2015. The well-attended member event provided a networking opportunity for a diverse group of individual, business persons, governmental agencies, and civic and social organizations to gather in celebration of the Chamber’s successful 2014-2015 year. A pink theme was carried out to promote the Chamber’s campaign for “Think Pink Randolph County” in support of breast cancer awareness. Dorothy Tidwell, Executive Director of the Chamber welcomed everyone to the meeting and thanked those attending for their continued membership, sponsorships and participation in the year’s events.

Highlighting the celebration was the presentation of the Randolph County Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards. The Chamber Awards were presented by 2014-2015 President Paula Lambert and Executive Director Dorothy Tidwell. Receiving this year’s awards are: Member of the Year: Small Town Bank, Community Service Award: State Farm Insurance, Ken Sieffert Agent and a tie for Lifetime Achievement Award: Roanoke Rehabilitation and Health Care Center and Traylor Retirement Center. Director Tidwell thanked the 2014-2015 Chamber Board of Directors for their continued support and guidance during the year. Out-going directors, Joe Ammons, Doug Williams and Jimmy Allen were thanked for their years of service to the Chamber and presented plaques from President Lambert and Director Tidwell.

Dr. Carol Knight, long-time Chamber supporter, presided over the swearing ceremonies of the in-coming Board of Directors. The 2015-2016 Board of Directors are as follows:
